What is an Adobe PDF document and how can I view them?
The Adobe Acrobat Portable Document files (PDF) contain documents
as they have been laid out in printed form, along with tables
and/or graphics.
To
view and print documents in Adobe Reader file format, you will need
to have a copy of Adobe
Reader. You can download the
latest Macintosh, Windows, and other versions of the Adobe
Reader,
from the Adobe
home site, at:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
The installation instructions come with the installer, but once you have selected the version you need, click the Download button, save the file (to your Program Files folder) on your hard drive.
When
it is finished downloading (which should take no more than 10 or
15 minutes), go offline and find the file (called
ar50enu.exe
or something similar) and double-click it. It will install
itself.
When you then click on PDF files, they will open easily.
Throughout
this website, all Adobe Reader documents are marked with this
icon. The file sizes are shown next to the titles
to help you
estimate download time. Unless you have a very fast connection,
you should assume approximately one K per second download
time.
A hint
Try this. Instead of left-clicking on the link to launch Adobe Reader and open the PDF document, Right-click on the link and select SAVE TARGET AS...
Save the PDF file to your hard-disk (somewhere you can find it) and then quit your browser, go offline and double-click the PDF to open it.
It is a more trouble-free way of downloading the file, making it easier to open again later without going online to find it, and it prints more effectively.
To view the Word .doc files
You will require MS Word 97/98/2000 installed on your computer.
For Windows users only, a free Microsoft Word Viewer is available.
To find this, and other converters and viewers for Microsoft products,
go to
To save these files to your computer
Windows: right-click on the links and select Save as...
Macintosh: hold down the Option key while clicking on the link for the same Save as... dialogue box to appear.
